Can't format pendrive?

1) Right click on My computer > Open Manage.
2) Select Disk management.
3) Right click on disk label (like J: etc..)
4) Change Drive letter and paths.....
5)  Click on Remove.
6) Then format pen drive...
7) After that again Add Drive letter (J:)
    Now your pen drive is safe formatted..

If you still unable to format USB Drive ...
1) Open command prompt(Run->cmd).
2) Select drive letter for USB Drive(Here it is M:).

3) Type format X (X = USB Drive letter):
4) Press ENTER.

    1. There must be a problem with your pen drive or flash drive .....first check that your drive is not Write protected.If it is write protect then you need to try CHKDSK .If disk checking will not work then you need to replace your drive.

    4. I had a similar problem with mine today, trying to reformat it to install yumi and put a bunch of linux distros, for some reason windows thought it only had 2 megs of storage and wouldn't format using cli or the regular gui tool windows has. Plugged it into my laptop that has linux mint on it, formatted immediately.. Seem to be some issues in the windows based tool, because my partition was already fat32, and didn't have anything reserved, but windows couldn't format it for some reason.

  14. okay everybody, if that does not work. that means your pendrive has reached the end of it's life cycle. in other words, this is what happens when you use it to the maximum times that it is capable of writing data on it. the OP should mention that on the article.
    if your pendrive reaches the end of it's cycle before months, get it replaced as i believe that is because the pendrive was faulty to begin with

  18. Thank you for that 411, Yogesh. This is a common problem USB users encountered. Since some drives are pre-formatted upon purchase, you should still format it using your device. But I agree with someone here that if all else fails, it means that the flash drive is no longer up for saving and such. - Marko
